An update :o
Tuesday, December 21st, 2004 08:29 amTerm has finished now. Been a rather hectic one too, there seemed to be no time to stop and breathe. Still, hopefully the holidays should give me some breathing space. Ben and I finished most of our Christmas shopping yesterday and cos it was a Monday and term still hasn't finished for most schools it wasn't too horrid. Unfortunately will have to do the last few bits in Croydon on the 23rd - that *will* be horrible :( Still, feel accomplished that most of it is out of the way :)
For those of you interested in my academic work, my marks have jumped this year from an average of 58% to an average of 68%. I'm so proud of myself :D I hope I can keep it up, cos this would mean I could graduate with a definate 2:1, which is what I'm after. Still, I'll cross my fingers and hope quietly that I can keep it up. Have holiday work to do, which sucks :( Even worse is that all the books I need are out of the library until the 12th January, with the deadline being 5 days or so after that :| Will need to talk to my tutor I think.
Speaking of my tutor, some may recall the battle over powerpoint I had with him:
Dear Dr Tutor,
I just picked them up from the history office - thank you. I'll return them
to you on Monday in the lesson if this is ok with you.
I was wondering if it would be alright to include a powerpoint presentation
within our presentation as a whole and if so if facilities could be provided
to run this off.
Thank you again,
Elizabeth
I got a reply:
Dear Elizabeth
I don't think the experiment with powerpoint was very successful last time: it
struck me as merely distracting. I have to book them in the History Office,
pick them up on Friday and lock them in the ES1 cupboard on the Sunday night
before, pick up an extension lead, and them take it all back to the office.
(in addition, I usually have slides to sort out and bring, plus all the usual
paper). I'd rather you use slides from the Library slide collection, which
are much simpler in ES1.
Tutor
So I sent him an email back:
Dear Dr Tutor,
I'd agree that when powerpoint is badly designed and animated it can be a
hinderance and distraction to the point of the presentation, however, when
used properly it can reinforce points in an easily digestable way that allows
students to get the most from a talk.
I am not planning on using animation or bright colours, merely a few pictures
and bullet points to emphasise the main points of the talk.
An alternative to powerpoint I could use, which cuts out all of the flashy
distracting powerpoint extras is http://www.meyerweb.com/eric/tools/s5/,
which is a very clean cut, lightweight way to do things.
Based on this evidence is their any chance that you could reconsider your
decision?
Yours Sincerely,
Elizabeth
I never recieved a reply. As a result my partner and I did a powerpoint pres and printed it to sheets of assitate instead, as they were the facilities available to us :|
After out visit to the British Museum as part of the course (piccies here), I sent him a link to the pictures I took. And got a reply:
Dear Liz
Thanks for sending me these. There are some v good ones, and it makes me
think I should move from slides to power point, and use my cam more.
Thanks again
Tutor

re:Dear Dr Tutor,
Date: Tue, Dec. 21st, 2004 09:32 pm (UTC)and incidently powerpoint for history presentations rocks, pretty much an automatic 70+ when done reasonably well with a few nice touches (piccies and hand outs) in my experience, much better at bringing a class to life than sitting there with a sheaf of scriblings.
