Duckling Rescue!
Saturday, April 22nd, 2006 08:03 amAt Christ Church we have a water feature in our courtyard that is something between a lake and a pond. On this lives a whole load of Moorhens and some ducks.
The other day I was sitting around the side of this pond thing (the side where there is a piece of two foot high concrete seperating the side of the water feature and the pathway) and a mother duck and her very new ducklings came along.
The mother jumped up onto the concrete and into the pond, leaving her brood alone. They then got very distressed at being alone and so me and a couple of other PGCE students moved them by hand into the water.
Oh my goodness! They were so tiny! They didn't struggle at all in our hands. They fitted into a palm and had tiny tails that waggled. They were so soft and warm. ♥
*melts*
Anyway, we got them all into the water, but that wasn't the end of the story, for one of them swam straight into the overflow pipe, which is just duckling sized and immediately started to cry for its mum. The mum, pleased to have her brood back was becoming very distressed at the sound of its baby which she couldn't reach.
In the end on of the English PGCEs got down on her hands and knees, was held by me and another guy on her belt and shoulders and she leaned over and put her hand down the overflow pipe to her shoulder and managed to fish out the duckling which went tearing off to its mum who looked pleased as anything.
AWW!
SO CUTE :D

Just a pity the only camera I had was my crappy phone one. Could have kicked myself :(
