Linux Question

I have a question for computer&Linux geeks.

Basically, after my last dist-upgrade, gnome (or debian?) refuses to adopt UK keyboard mapping and every time I try I get the following error message:

"Error activating XKB configuration.
It can happen under various circumstances:
- a bug in libxklavier library
- a bug in X server (xkbcomp, xmodmap utilities)
- X server with incompatible libxkbfile

X server version data:
The XFree86 Project, Inc
40300001
You are using XFree 4.3.0.
There are known problems with complex XKB configurations.
Try using a soimpler configuration or taking a more fresh version of XFree software.
"

So...any ideas how to fix? This is the newest version and my config hasn't been changed in years.

Do you think I should switch from XFree86 to Xorg?

Am I talking shit?

Help would be appreciated :)

--------

[Edit] All fixed! I purged XFree86 and moved to Xorg and when I broke it all horribly ben fixed it.

Winnar :D

Ta to skel and evad too - you may claim free chocolate when you next see me :P ;)

If you're using testing they moved over to Xorg a while ago. Took me a little bit of manual fiddling to get rid of the XFree86 stuff. Damn mesa and opengl ambiguity in the package choices.

If you're using stable which is XFree86 based ... erm *panics*. What's the keyboard section of XF86Config-4? :/

I'm using testing. It looks like xorg is installed on aragorn but it seems aragorn is still trying to use xfree86 - no wonder stuff won't work ;)

What did you end up doing? Short of rm -rf / that is :P

Erm. purging the old xserver-xfree86 at least.
If you've been using aptitude fully then it should remove other junk that's no longer necessary.
Try deborphan?
Look through the dependancy list in xserver-xorg and see what comes up with xfree in the name and is installed.
I dunno really. XD

Oops.

I think I just broke my X O.O

Perhaps I should just cut my losses and reinstall...

Yes, but I'm not sure a reinstall with etch is a great idea. It's def. broken on here and it does lots of random crashes.

I dunno, sarge never ever crashed for me.

In testing, xorg and xfree are designed to live together, in one of the dpkg reconfigure wizards it asks you what one you wish to use. When I dist-upgraded from sarge to etch lots of things broke - I don't think etch is quite ready yet. the early days in the testing releases are like this, though.

Really? The xserver-xfree package is gone. Hm, no, I lie. It has returned "transitional package for moving from xfree86 to X.Org" so that dependancies don't break.
