London trip, Science Museum, a giant moth and Willy Fogg
Thursday, May 22nd, 2008 04:40 pmBen's in London this week on a residential course to learn how to do cluster stuff, so rather than be at home on my own all week, I took the opportunity to visit London for a couple of days. My trip didn't get off to a great start - my train was delayed and I ended up getting in to London an hour later than planned. While I was waiting for my train I saw a very interesting piece of graffiti - "Sir Arthur Harris for the fourth plinth" (for those who don't know what that means - Sir Arthur Harris, Fourth Plinth).
While in London I met up with
kimble and we wandered around pretty much the entire Science Museum, paying special attention to the Wellcome wing medical floors (4th and 5th floors), the Making the Modern World exhibit on the first floor (including a wall full of 80s stuff that
kimble and I kept exclaiming about remembering) and "The Secret Life of the Home" exibit (which included a bunch of stuff from The Secret Life of Machines) in the basement. We were very disappointed in the "Energy: Fuelling the Future section" because they kept censoring our cynical comments :(
The best item on display by far was the bent coathanger from the basement exhibit. The card with it labelled it as being "c1980" and explained how people got tired of having to pay to replace stolen car ariels and so used the metal coathangers on which clothes returned from the dry cleaners.

(Sorry about the quality - I took it with my phone camera).
That evening
benc, dmc, a friend of dmc's and I ate at The Narrow which is a Gordon Ramsay gastropub. The food was absolutely gorgeous, and balanced perfectly. I was glad to get back to the Hotel afterwards because my feet were killing me and I was very tired. The day was good though and well worth it.
The next day I came home, having lunch at a Fuzzy's Grub before I came back. If you live in/near London and haven't been to a Fuzzy's then go! They do a roast dinner in a box for not very much money. Mmmm, roast-in-a-box :D
The journey back was much better than the journey going even if, according to South Eastern the carriage I was on didn't actually exist as part of the train.
Last night I caught a Giant Moth. Ugh.

Today I've been watching Around The World With Willy Fogg (theme tune), which was one of the blockbuster dvds that turned up recently. It's such fun :D I really enjoy 80s cartoons :) In it's honour I've made a new lj icon (see the one with this post :))
Phew. That was quite an update. I daresay there won't be another proper one for months now!

'cause a lot of time has gone
we must be ready
to go awaayyy
80 days around the world
we'll find a pot of gold
just sitting where the rainbow's ending
time - we'll fight against the time
and we'll fly on the white wings of the wind
80 days around the world
no we won't say a word
before the ship is really back
Round, round, all around the world
round, all around the world
round, all around the world
round, all around the world!
Willy Fog rocked :D and I'm amazed so many people remember it!
