lizziec: (Musicals)

Niamh: Performing an up tempo number this week, which makes a change for the last couple of weeks, but unfortunately it doesn't really work for her. Her timing is all over the place, there are places where she struggles with pitch and she seems to be shouting more than singing. Disappointing.

Rachel: Seemed to be in tune for most of it, clearly tried to act the song, but I'm not sure she pulled it off.

Jessie: I'm fast going off Jessie due to the singing out of the corner of her mouth, and she's still doing it this week. It would really do her a favour if someone would mention it in her notes after the performance. She is clearly working at bringing acting into the song though, and benefits I think from a slower tempo song than she usually gets, as it gives her a chance to bring the acting element through. This week was one of her better performances IMO (but she's just spoiled it for me by arguing with the judges and making excuses, especially Denise about "taking direction")

Sarah: Rapidly becoming one of my favourites. I was rather lukewarm on her until last week when she blew me out of the water with her song. She seems to have the acting down pat (as far as one can act a pop song). My favourite performance of the week so far. Yay - Denise agrees with me on the acting thing :D

Keisha: Distracted by her dress - she looks like she's about to fall out of it (especially when sitting on the stairs). Keeps fading behind the backing singers vocally. No wonder she's having voice issues, the song is not so much sung as shouted, and she's having issues with "acting" this song. Unless something goes dreadfully wrong with everyone else, she may be for the chop this week. A very very weak performance.

Ashley: I'm afraid I'm with ALW here and don't rate her voice, and never really have (though I feel ALW has been rather too cruel in his "notes" - no constructive criticism, just criticism). BBC wardrobe department have problems again, the dress she's in looks like a modified bin liner unfortunately. She's clearly doing her best to act the song though, and hasn't really had pitch or timing problems like the first couple of performers. Based on this performance I think she could be safe this week (and I hope so - there are others who deserve to go much more). Both John and Denise didn't rate her performance though, calling it "cheesy". Hmm. Maybe I just failed to notice her problems? Or is this another case of Samantha last week when I though she was dire and they disagreed?

Samantha: Didn't someone else sing "Since You Been Gone" earlier in the competition? Pitch problems again this week, looked like she was trying to act the song, but it didn't come across as well as the acting of some of the others (especially Sarah) this week. I really did not rate this performance (and felt with her dress that if she opened her legs a little more we'd see her pants - it made me rather uncomfortable [and Barry Humphries Letching over her just made me wince, big time]).

Jodie: Despite being worried about the notes in this song she seemed to nail them, and her tuning was much more consistant than many of her fellow Nancys. She worked hard at the acting and I believed in the character she created around the song. I very much enjoyed her performance. She's one of my favourites, and if there's any justice she'll be here again next week.

I enjoyed this week's group song more than other weeks - odd really given that Pick a Pocket isn't a song for Nancy!

Andrew counselled against seeing the popsongs as just pop songs and trying to see the acting going on. If he's that bothered he should make them use Musical songs - he's in charge so he has a say in the song choices, so I have little sympathy with him.

The stage fighting was pretty cool - some of those punches looked like they actually landed! Alexander goes through to the Semis. These boys have seen too much Annie - the "american" accents are rather prominent!

Favourite performances this week from Sarah and Jodie. Least favourites (and ones that should land the singers in the bottom two) Niamh and Keisha.

[Edit - Sunday] Samantha, Jessie, Jodie, Rachel, Ashley and Sarah are through, leaving Keisha and Niamh in the sing off (exactly the two I thought should be in the sing off, so I'm feeling rather pleased).

The sing off song is "The Rose" (from the musical "The Rose"). Niamh's voice dominates the sing off, but I rated Keisha over Niamh in terms of her acting of the song. Given how many times Keisha has been in the sing off now though, I think she'll be lucky if ALW saves her again.

ALW says it's the wrong result and is Angry. I think he's wrong and it's the right result but that's neither here nor there. He saved Niamh and let Keisha go. Not a surprise. Promises to help Keisha's future career. I'm not terribly sorry she's gone, and I'd have felt much the same if Niamh had gone.

It was very funny how ALW flounced off at the end (IMO).
