lizziec: (Musicals)

Niamh: Better than last week, pity that she seemed constantly struggling against the band for volume. There are parts when the band completely overwhelms her voice. No real pitch problems that I noticed. A solid performance

Cleo: Song seemed in the wrong key for her, she kept bottoming out which led to pitch problems. Another one who struggled against the volume of the band.

Keisha: One of my favourite performances last week. She seemed to have some tuning and timing issues this week. Most of it looked like it was down to the fact that this week she was dancing and singing at the same time, and if she can't manage that, then she'll never be right for Nancy. This is casting for a musical after all.

Samantha: Started out of tune and seemed to continue with pitch problems. She at least took the song and tried to use it to portray a character, which is what she'll be doing in the west end, so that at least is encouraging.

Francesca: Can't seem to stop herself smiling, even when the song doesn't call for it. There's also something in her mannerisms I don't like, and her vocal tone. Especially as she kept yelling this week. I just don't see her as Nancy, even if she can sing technically well (and there were a few tuning issues this week). I wouldn't be surprised to see her in the bottom two again this week.

Rachel: I really did not like her last week, but this week was pretty good. She really conveyed the character in the song, rather than just singing the words. She had obviously thought about what the song meant and put that into her performance.

Sarah: Spat some of her words out which wasn't very nice to see or hear. Physical performance rather "Jazz Hands" as Denise put it last week. A bit like Francesca - doesn't seem to be able to stop herself smiling even when it's rather at odds with the song. I agree with Barry Humphries. I could see her more as Glenda in The Wizard of Oz, rather than Nancy in Oliver!.

Tara: Interpreted the song well, but had major tuning issues. The problem with the song she sang is that I always think of Bridget Jones when I hear it. Oops ;) Andrew said the song didn't suit her, which I absolutely agree with. I feel that was a little unfair given that they did not get to choose them!

Jodie: A technically good performance, but I really don't think it's a good song choice for poor Jodie, it seems almost impossible to get through anything of Nancy through it. Personality wise she is my favourite Nancy, but if she keeps being given songs like that, I have to wonder how long she'll be in the competition. Andrew said the song didn't suit her, which I absolutely agree with. I feel that was a little unfair given that they did not get to choose them!

Ashley: Started with tuning issues and again I found it hard to "connect" with her. I suspect the scottish vote (as witnessed in ADWD and XFactor for multiple years) will mobilise for her and she'll be in the competition for a long time. At the moment I think that fact is a pity, as I don't really enjoy her performances or see her as Nancy.

Jessie: A good technical performance. Seemed to try and find a character in the song and tell the story of that character which helped make this one of my favourite performances of the night.

Something I've noticed this week - It's a real pity about the "London (Cockney)" accents of a number of the prospective Nancy's. They're so overdone it's silly. It makes me wish the musical wasn't set in London at all!

The costume department are still struggling I noticed, with those stupid hems making a reappearance this week. I feel the need whenever I see them to take a pair of scissors to them.

A recurring theme this week for me is that the girls are struggling to be heard against the band, meaning they seem to yell a lot. Don't know how this could be solved, but I think it really needs to be looked into.

I also have the gripe about show songs again. But I sense I'll be griping about that for the whole series. I did notice that the performances that I much prefered were ones who seemed to try and interpret the songs (sometimes very poor choices) as show songs.

Again, the Olivers felt shoehorned in. I feel that this programme would probably be better off without the search for the Olivers. I feel mean saying it though because they're very sweet and everything, but they add nothing, and in some ways take away from the search for the Nancy's.

[Edit - Sunday] I'm not surprised at who ended up in the sing off, as Keisha especially hadn't performed so well in my opinion, seeming distracted by singing/dancing/acting all at the same time. I don't think either of them performed the sing off song (I Know Him So Well, Chess) particuarly well, both had problems with tuning and seemed rather disconnected from the lyrics. I certainly didn't envy ALW his decision tonight, I'm not sure I could have chosen between them.

So Cleo has gone and Keisha is safe. Hopefully, Keisha will take her notes from this week and work on her problems (especially as I know she has it in her - I loved her performance last week), and Cleo will go on to great things in other ways.
