lizziecIn today's "Independent" there was a column called "The World According To..." and today's installment was Jack Davenport. So for you, lisaofdoom, because you are in the US and probably won't get to read this otherwise...
The actor Jack Davenport is best known for his TV roles in This Life and Coupling. His films include The Talented Mr Ripley and Pirates of the Caribbean. He is married to the actress Michelle Gomez.
What's the secret of being a happy couple?
Compromise. You have to learn to give and take, otherwise you can't share your existance with anyone. You also need to know the correct moment to give gifts.
Are the Oscars overrated?
Not if you're winning one: it'll change your balance sheet forever. If you look at it coldly, of course, to say one film or one performance is better than another then it's a nonsense. But it's the pinnacle of the slightly ludicrous reverence that showbusiness is given in our culture, and very enjoyable for it. I wouldn't refuse one.
What makes you cringe?
Watching George Bush try to form a coherent sentence.
The Streets: Genius or Joker?
Neither: But I think he's got a nice way with a lyric, I really do, and it's nice to have someone so undeniably english.
What cause would you march for?
I'm not a marcher as such, but I have marched. I have my beliefs, but there's nothing worse than reading actors' half baked opinions on subjects they haven't really grasped.
Which of the seven deadly sins would you admit to?
Sloth. I'm only lazy sometimes, but I berate myself for it.
Which TV programme would you ban?
I'm not a big fan of censorship, but I suppose we could go for a blanket ban on TV Makeover programmes or perhaps just a moratorium.
Would you put your daughter on the stage?
I wouldn't put her on the stage. Both my parents are in the business and they discouraged me from becoming an actor at first because it's a difficult way to earn a living. They were both very successful but they made it clear that that wasn;t the reakity for most actors. That's just responsible parenting.
When was the last time you broke the law?
I might have been guilty of doing 32mph in a 30mph zone yesterday. But I can't remember; I was going so fast...
Do you seize the day?
I like to try - as long as I'm not feeling too slothful. I've got better at it with age. You suddenly find in your late twenties/early thirties that you wake up natrually at 7:30am and wonder what the hell happened.
