Animal testing
Wednesday, February 22nd, 2006 07:15 pmThe first pro-animal testing march is to be held in Oxford this weekend. The march is making a stand against the people in the ALF who have now listed all Oxford staff and students as "legitimate targets" as a result of the lab being built there. Apparently the lovely people of the ALF are behind at least one arson attack over this.
I have to say, I don't support the needless suffering of Animals, but I believe in animal testing for medical purposes. I will never forget that if it wasn't for such things I would not be here. My father was born in 1947 and just 4 years later was diagnosed with type one diabetes, which rendered him insulin dependent for the rest of his life. Not only was the need for Insulin demonstrated through the use of testing on animals, but for many years the only source of insulin was that from Animals, specifically pigs.
Without animal testing and the use of animal insulin my father would have died, as did many others in the years before these developments were made. If he had been born just 30 years earlier then he would not have lived.
I can't help wondering if the ALF people and those opposed to animal testing would/will feel the same when confronted with a major illness which had been discovered with the use of animal testing, or can only be treated with drugs tested on animals. It's one thing to say you will reject them when you're healthy, but when confronted with death...? I can't imagine that the majority of activists would stick to their principals then.
Quiz meme thing - not sure how accurate it is though...
