My new laptop (Thinkpad SL500) arrived on Wednesday, which was extremely exciting for me. As always, I got a lot of pictures :) Now I've finished setting it up and moving files around I finally got around to getting the pictures off my camera and posting them here to show off :)

My old laptop (Thinkpad R50e) was old...

...and pretty busted :/ (Yes, that is micropore holding a corner on.)

When I got back from picking it up there was some post for me :)

It was my new copy of Ramona Forever! :D

I'm not quite sure how I managed it, but I was patient enough to take pictures of the unwrappening:

The lid is shiny, but fingerprints silly easily.

Old vs New (click to embiggen).

All pictures.

The new one runs like a dream, even with Vista installed. I think I'm in love (sorry [livejournal.com profile] benc).

I'm still trying to decide what to do with my old one, which is staying with me for a few weeks at least so I'm sure I have everything I need from it and I'm completely happy with my new one. Any ideas? Any people maybe interested in taking it?

On Friday there was some interesting post and for a change it was all for me! Usually all the postie brings me is bills and bank statements, but today I got a much better haul, which inserted some excitement my usually predictable days.

First up was the TV Licence (excellent value for money IMO). Ok, so it's not very exciting, but it was part of my haul, so I included it for completeness' sake. What that TV Licence does mean is that it is coming up for four years since we moved in to our flat and had a "putting Ikea furniture together and watching Eurovision" party (pics of that here, here and here). It really doesn't seem like that long. It's also worth saying that there is nowhere near that much space in our flat any more!

Next up was my Graze Box, which was supposed to arrive on Thursday, but got stuck in the post somewhere and actually turned up on Friday instead. It was yummy - especially the fresh apple, which appeared not to have suffered from being in the post an extra day :) If you want a free first box and half price second box (you can easily cancel after the free one has turned up), then go to graze.com and enter the following code: QV67PBDC.

Last in the stack of post, a set of 15 War films given away in editions of the Daily Mail a month or so ago. Huge thanks to [livejournal.com profile] no1typo, who sullied her bank account and house by buying the paper and sending off for the films. They arrived on Friday, with the rest of my exciting post and I don't own most of them. I'm looking forward to settling down and watching them over the next few weeks :)

Finally for this post, I took the above today of my favourite bear Max posing with [livejournal.com profile] benc's eee 900A. I've made an icon out of it :) All of the pictures are here. Sometimes I think I have too much time on my hands ;)

EDIT: On the theme of geekiness, my new laptop should hopefully be showing up on Tuesday. If you've not voted in my name poll, I'd appreciate it if you would :)

I finally got round to photographing and uploading more pictures from "From Vision to Reality", as well as rephotographing those that were already there so they are better quality. They are here for those who want to look :) I've also made a new LJ icon.

ION: I went to see The Dark Knight this evening at Ashford. Twas good. Won't say any more though in case of spoilers.

It's a been a nice few days despite the fact that I hate my job and my computer, Aragorn, is misbehaving - it kernel oopses and locks up when data is being pushed at it over the network (but not pulled). After changing the hard disks, power supply, network card and network cable we ran memtest and a few minutes ago the screen lit up red with errors. I think we may have just tickled the problem ;) I hope it's that simple - if it's not it means an upgrade of motherboard, ram and processor we can ill afford (who can?!)

The first nice thing was that Liz and Si came to Canterbury for a rare visit and between them, me and [livejournal.com profile] benc and pao we sacrificed a couple of duck and many pork dumplings at Cafe de China which I don't think I've been to since my birthday in November. Yum.

Once the duck had been well and truly sacrificed pao went home to tend to mrspao who is ill :( (get well soon!) and Liz and Si came to our local pub, The Dog, Rough Common (which has improved immensely under new management) and played a couple of games of pool and drank beer (or in Si's case, pisswater :P).

This evening we met up with [livejournal.com profile] fooflington and [livejournal.com profile] rahslowe on the beach for some fish and chips. Rah was mad and went in the sea :P Later on Laura, Jase and Laura's sister Lizzie came along too and there was more sea-ness by Rah and Laura. A little later as it was getting cold and dark (and feeling like April again instead of June) Foo, Rah, Ben and I went to the pub where the men drank beer (Whitstable Bay and Early Bird) and we played pool. Rah and I lost badly :(

So anyway, now I smell of smoky pub, which is bad, but I've had a couple of lovely days with my friends so I really don't mind.

Thanks guys :)

Once upon a time (a long time ago in a galaxy far far away) there was a family with a "new" computer. To start it needed a floppy disk in its drive (built in to the keyboard) and when it did start it presented its operator with a numeric menu from which you chose options 1-*. When it started it said Hello Phillip, How is your lovely little family today? and the computer was much loved, for it came with First Choice (on a floppy - nothing on this computer ran without a floppy) to make documents on and a dot matrix printer to print the documents out. It came with a disc with games on - Tic-Tac-Toe, Chess and Frogger.

It was great.

It was an Olivetti PC1 with one floppy drive (like the one featured here). It was very light, much lighter than my PC now (Aragorn - as of last night the owner of two 250g disks [raid1] and a new PSU) because this is all there was to it.

With its (tiny) black and white screen it looked much like this:

The reason I'm talking about all this is because today I finally got round to checking on some old floppy disks that I found when ben and I were spring cleaning last week. Much of the results are very noisy and not terribly fruitful. Alas, most of these disks and the data on them are unsalvigable it would seem.

One of the disks was very old. It was called "Getting Started".

I took screenshots of what I found on them. The dates show just how old they are:

...Wow. I am of the firm believe that most of the WPK files are ones I created. Especially ones with titles like "THE_CAT" and "THE_DOG".

Of course, now I'm drowning in a wave of nostalgia.

And spending the rest of my day making models of the Starship Enterprise out of dead floppies.

Maxtor suck. Never buy Maxtor hard disks.

Anyone got a 60gb disk they want to give me? It appears virtually impossible to buy them any more (this one is out of warranty) and I can't afford to trade up to the pretty inexpensive 160gb/250gb disks.

Thank god for RAID...

Having *finally* got an ADSL connection (albeit a very flaky one) at 6mc I have uploaded all the pictures that were waiting :)

Ph33r :P

You remember the story of me getting in contact with an old friend? Well the 29th May was her birthday so I toodled along to her house for the party. I had a lovely time, especially making use of the trampoline :P Piccies of that event (including me on the trampoline here.

My last shift with the children was on Friday morning and I got some of the most fun and beautiful presents I could ever have wished for. I got a bear and a thing full of hot chocolate and a game for two to play in the bath >:) The cards and letters were the worst though. I didn't cry when I was there but I came back home and *howled* about it all. PIctures of almost everything (including becky's letter which is by far the worst) are here.

My results were posted on the boards at the back of the library at 5pm on Friday. I swore I would not be involved in the scrum that ensues once the humanities guy turns up with the lists, but after a little encouragement from ben, there I was, right in the middle. I went back yesterday to preserve the result for posterity ;) I'm glad I won't have to do *that* wait ever again!

Samphire Hoe is where Ben and I went after I got my degree results. I was so full of nervous energy the walk did me good. It was really beautiful though Ben suffered because of the high concentration of pollen there. Well worth a visit. For more info see this.

Finally, yesterday I got round to setting up aragorn despite the lack of desk... Aragorn's new home is perched on top of two Dell boxes and another computer - see this picture for how unstable the whole arrangement actually looks ;)

Ok - all piccies done now - have a look, especially at the Samphire Hoe ones :)

*bumbles off*

Edit: I forgot to mention the lovely rainbow I saw a few days ago :) Go look! :D

I've updated my guide to screen and irssi and added a copy of my irssi config to my website.

A review of H2G2 (very uncomplimentary) can be found here. A longer one with spoilers in is here. Don't click on the wrong one and then blame me. :P

Mmmm - geekery :D

Zero progress on essays though :(

Had a couple of odd dreams last night - odd because I remember them so clearly.

The first was that Vindaloo was uberb0rk and ben was inconsolable.

The second was debian stable was upgraded overnight to debian sarge so I was helping ben upgrade the boxes running stable, but then it turned out debian fucked up and the upgrade destroyed the build of them on the systems...

I'm curious to know why they both revolve around computers... >.

Term has finished now. Been a rather hectic one too, there seemed to be no time to stop and breathe. Still, hopefully the holidays should give me some breathing space. Ben and I finished most of our Christmas shopping yesterday and cos it was a Monday and term still hasn't finished for most schools it wasn't too horrid. Unfortunately will have to do the last few bits in Croydon on the 23rd - that *will* be horrible :( Still, feel accomplished that most of it is out of the way :)

For those of you interested in my academic work, my marks have jumped this year from an average of 58% to an average of 68%. I'm so proud of myself :D I hope I can keep it up, cos this would mean I could graduate with a definate 2:1, which is what I'm after. Still, I'll cross my fingers and hope quietly that I can keep it up. Have holiday work to do, which sucks :( Even worse is that all the books I need are out of the library until the 12th January, with the deadline being 5 days or so after that :| Will need to talk to my tutor I think.

Speaking of my tutor, some may recall the battle over powerpoint I had with him:

first email to tutor )

I got a reply:

first email from tutor )

So I sent him an email back:

second email to tutor )

I never recieved a reply. As a result my partner and I did a powerpoint pres and printed it to sheets of assitate instead, as they were the facilities available to us :|

After out visit to the British Museum as part of the course (piccies here), I sent him a link to the pictures I took. And got a reply:

surprising letter from my tutor )

Bwhahaha. I shall view that as a victory! :D

Anyway, this has been long and boring enough, so I shall finish up now with a meme I stole from [livejournal.com profile] red_pill.

This weekend was Ben Tanner's stag night so my ben went up to London for it. This gave me the excuse to go home for an afternoon/evening and mum and I had a nice time, and I managed to get phil a working, uptodate kernel sorted (ben fixed the remaining broken bits in the morning). This means Phil now has something better than a 2.2.* that works :) Today ben and I had a lazy morning and came back to canterbury via Folkestone and the best ice cream shop in the world ever! :D On the way back we stopped at The Jackdaw in Denton (just outside Hawkinge), a pub featured in The Battle of Britain (an excellent war film with a great soundtrack and dog fight scenes). This led to two things. 1) an excellent lunch/tea thing, with wonderful desserts :D I reccommend this to anyone with a car :D 2) us humming the battle of britain march (the theme to the movie) all afternoon and evening :)

A really really nice weekend :)

P.S. We're in full stealth mode here at franklyn road to avoid trick and treaters. It's working so far, just hope the little buggers angels haven't egged my car...

An odd weekend all in all, but good fun :)

Saturday started very very early as ben had to be on campus for 8am because Library power had to go off for maintainance and so all the kit in the machine room had to go off too. So he went and did that, then we had coffee from Starbucks while Estates played around with the power before coming back so ben could switch all the kit back on again. Then we gathered bits and off I drove to London where I went to see Telehouse cos ben had some work to do there. I must admit it was very very shiny, but this wore off after about 10 mins and then it was just boring ;) Met some ANL people, which was quite jibbly and found their attitudes to me really good. Found people listening to my opinion on something and taking my comments on board and *that* was very cool. Anyway, after breaking some stuff (and 6 hours there) ben and I departed to have dinner with my mum and brother and *what* a dinner that was :D We had 3 courses, including Serrano ham for a first course! I haven't found anywhere in canterbury that sells this precious material :D Biiiiiiiiiig Chicken pie for main course and yumyums for dessert. It was unfortunate that we couldn't stay longer :| I like home visits.

Sunday was ben's parents where we ate yummy spag bol and chatted and had a generally nice time. I got my birthday pressies from them cos I won't be seeing them again till after my birthday. I got 21 presents and £21. I can see a theme here ;) Lots of chocolate and nice smellies and a really cool book with piccies of Britain in the World War Two. Only downside to ben's parents is their cats who are great but have such fine fur that it irritates my chest and nose, so antihistamines are always needed when we visit ;)

Hrm...I think that's about it. My life very boring ;)

Ooh - quick plug. The Comspoc website is actually back up with new content! :D

Must get dressed now and go to work...(much babysitting tonight :))
